47 New Students Accepted Into NHS

May 5, 2017
Last night, Thursday May 4, 47 new members were inducted into Greendale’s chapter of National Honor Society, a nationally recognized organization based in Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service.
For sophomore Maddy Dalton, this day was long awaited.
“For me, ever since my brother got into the National Honor Society, I wanted to as well. I kept up my grades and participated in many different service events. When I applied for NHS I was very nervous and did not know what to expect,” she said. “Then the day came when I finally got that glorious letter stating my acceptance into NHS. My family and I were so happy, excited, and proud of me for doing such a good job. Being in NHS means that I can prove to others what good leadership skills are, what good teamwork is, and what being a good person is like.”
The induction ceremony was held in the IMC. Parents and families of the inductees gathered to watch as their students were honored for their excellence in all that they do.
The ceremony began with a welcome from senior NHS officer Logan Groh. Groh and fellow officers, senior Sheridan Schaefer and juniors Cecelia Brozynski and Andrew Crapitto, then each spoke about one of the pillars of the National Honor Society.
Following the speeches, the officers read aloud the names of every inductee and the crowd watched each individual shake the officers’ hands, process around the library, be congratulated by NHS adviser Amanda Hauser, and finally, sign their name in the book containing the signatures of every member of Greendale’s chapter of NHS dating back to 1959.
After all the names were written, Schaefer and her fellow officers led the new inductees in reciting the NHS pledge.
Following a thunderous round of applause, the newest members of Greendale’s chapter of NHS enjoyed cake with their family and friends.
As stated in the speeches by the officers, being a member of National Honor Society is a huge honor, one that each inductee recognizes.
“I was truly honored when I found out I got accepted into National Honor Society since I know the members have strong leadership, a good work ethic, and kindness, and I was proud to know that being accepted meant that I had those qualities that people strive for,” sophomore Abigail Amidzich said.
Several students inducted expressed gratitude for the new opportunities they will have as a member of NHS.
“Being inducted into the National Honor Society means that I will have more opportunities to do good in my community. This gives me more chances to meet new people and volunteer my time for a good cause,” sophomore Michaela Sarenac said.
Sophomore Elly Hottinger agrees.
“To me, being inducted into the National Honor Society means being more responsible for helping out others in my community, all while keeping good grades and making sure to be respectful to others,” she said.
This ceremony marks the beginning of a journey for 47 GHS students and Hauser is very excited to share it with them.
“When there is a group of new students coming into NHS I always am excited to work with them. They bring new ideas, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic to the group. I enjoy getting to know all of them as individuals since I don’t often know a lot of them prior to them being inducted into NHS,” she said. “This year’s group seems very strong and I am excited to see what the future holds!”
As for Dalton, May 4, 2017 is a day she will remember for a long time.
“NHS has been one of my dreams for long time and now that I have been accepted, it means that it is dream come true,” she said.
