GHS Students Prepare for a “Trip to the Tropics”

The halls of GHS are filled with school spirit this week in preparation for the Homecoming football game on Friday and dance on Saturday.

The week started off differently than in past years. While Monday has traditionally been Pajama Day, this year students selected Jersey Day to kick off spirit week.

Junior Student Council member Carley Rudd was disappointed in this change.

“My favorite spirit day is pajama day but the seniors decided against doing that this year. Maybe it’ll come back next year,” Rudd said.

Tuesday was Decades Day, with the seniors dressed in 50’s attire, juniors dressed like they were from the 60’s, sophomores in 70’s fashion, and freshman dressed like 90’s kids.

For senior Sarah Kuhnke, Decades Day was the best day of the week.

“I really like how people dressed in the ‘50s and I think it’s fun to be able to go in the past and dress like a different generation,” she said.

As always, the halls were a rainbow on Wednesday, Class Color Day. Seniors dressed in black, juniors in blue, sophomores in red, and freshmen in yellow.

Class Color Day is sophomore Aleks Krecak’s favorite spirit day.

“I liked the color day because I got to see what grade people are in who I don’t know. I thought it was neat to see who was from which grade,” he said.

On Wednesday evening, Moana was projected on the back of the building for an audience of spirited students.

On Thursday, the students dressed in tropical attire, coinciding with the theme for this year’s Homecoming Dance, A Trip to the Tropics.

Senior Corinne Bialo is a head of the Student Council Events Committee and was instrumental in choosing this year’s theme.

“The Student Council decides the theme, and we were stuck between ‘Luau’ and ‘Under the Sea’, so I thought of combining both with ‘A Trip to the Tropics,’” Bialo said.

Thursday evening brought the Powderpuff game in which two teams of senior girls, the Hulas and the Mermaids, battled in a memorable flag football game.

“I am excited for Powderpuff because sports weren’t exactly ever my thing so I think it’s cool to have to have the opportunity to play under the lights with my whole school supporting me,” Kuhnke said.

Friday filled the halls with Greendale spirit for the Homecoming Pep Assembly. For many students, Greendale Day is their favorite day of the week.

“My favorite spirit day is Greendale Spirit Day because I love to see all of the students dress up in their Greendale gear and support our school,” Bialo said.

The Homecoming football game will be played at 7 p.m. against New Berlin West.

To wrap up the week, the Homecoming dance will be held Saturday, Sept. 22 in the MPR due to the hot weather. The dance begins at 8 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. No students will be allowed in after 8:30 and tickets cost $15 per student. Student Council adviser Zach Geiger hopes the dance will be well attended.

“Last year, we had 475 students attend and I hope to have at least that many students enjoy Homecoming 2017,” he said.

Bialo believes students will enjoy the dance this year.

“I think students will like the theme and how we incorporate it into the dance. I also think they’ll like the dance because it’s an opportunity to dance and hang out with friends,” she said.
