GHS Students Enjoy “A Trip to the Tropics”

GHS students celebrated the finale of Homecoming Week 2017 last Friday and Saturday with a Pep Assembly, Football game, and the annual Homecoming Dance.

The Pep Rally was held Friday afternoon and was hosted by seniors Katie Hartung and Sam Lister.

“My favorite part about emceeing was going off script and having control of trying to make the whole pep assembly fun again unlike recent years,” Lister said.

The cheer team showed off their skills and the Poms teams performed their award-winning routine.  The cross country team also brought energy into the gym when they ran the Homecoming game ball in all the way from New Berlin West.

Another exciting part of the Pep Rally that students look forward to is the announcement of the Spirit King and Queen.  This year, the awards went to seniors Alex Waterstraat and Sarah Kuhnke.

“I felt really amazing honestly. I felt like I was recognized by the school in a way that showed my creativity as a person,” Kuhnke said.  

While many students spend a lot of money on their outfits for Spirit Week, Kuhnke is proof that that is not necessary.

“I either had the stuff or borrowed from friends,” she said.

Waterstraat also felt honored.

“Obviously it was an honor.  I’ve been hard for it all my high school career.  This was just the icing on the cake,” he said.

After the Spirit King and Queen were announced, 11 senior boys took center stage for the long awaited Guy Poms routine.

Senior Michael Miksic participated in the routine and had a lot of fun.

“It was just something fun to do my last year of high school with all my friends,” he said.

Finally, the moment many were most excited about, the announcement of the 2017 Homecoming King and Queen were announced.  Each member of the court received a box.  The girl that received the King’s crown was Queen and the boy that received the Queen’s crown was the King.  Senior Gabby Busalacchi was crowned Queen and Senior Kyle Scheel was crowned King.

The excitement continued Friday night at the Homecoming Football game.  The Panthers beat the Vikings 13-6 with the student section decked out in green and black.

The finale of a week filled with excitement happened on Saturday night: the 2017 Homecoming Dance.  The dance was held in the MPR to try to help with the heat.

“I thought the dance was very fun. Everyone looked so nice and I love being able to hang out with my friends,” Kuhnke said.

Hartung agrees.

“I had a lot of fun at the dance. I brought my friend from Greenfield and convinced a couple people she was from France. I just loved dancing like an idiot and being with my friends,” Hartung said.

As far as the music went, students had mixed feelings.

“The DJ was better this year than in past years.  Last year the DJ would top in the middle of song and change it,” senior Danica Basta said.

Kuhnke also thought the music choices were good.

“The remixing was groovy,” she said.

Lister had other thoughts.

“The DJ was awful,” he said.

Aside from the music, overall the dance was successful and students had a lot of fun.

“It was fun and I liked the music this year,” sophomore Bella Thiel said.
