Students at GHS had the opportunity to donate their blood on Tuesday. Student Council hosts this blood drive every fall and spring of every school year.

Students here at GHS know the importance of giving.

“I feel like if I have something that other people need then what’s stopping me from giving it to them?” junior Thalia Contreras said.

The school managed to get 70 donors, which is 56 units of blood. GHS’ initial goal was to have at least 65 donors, which would’ve been 50 units of blood. Many of those donors are either returning donors or first time donors.

“It’s my third time. I was really nervous my first time because of needles. I’m still scared of needles,” junior Asalah Jamaleddin said.

The blood will help many of those who were affected by the recent hurricanes and the victims in the recent shooting.

“I’m donating to help those affected by the hurricane and those in Las Vegas. I like to save lives and it’s easy to save lives by donating blood,” Jamaleddin said.

People donate for the obvious reason of helping people, but others like to also get something out of it.

“I feel like it’s a thing to do. Also I want to find out my blood type,” junior Jennifer Justus said.

Many newcomers faced their fears of needles and other concerns so that they could make a difference.

“It was my first time donating and I was nervous, I might pass out,” senior Lena Abukhamireh said.

The staff at GHS shed some light on how important it is to donate blood.

“There is a need and demand for people to receive blood in times of emergency,” science teacher Jessica Holschbach said. “It is something other humans can give of themselves to assist those in need.”
