60 Second Spotlight: Tyler Wrightsman

Alexandra Guenette, Writer

Junior Tyler Wrightsman is completing his first year of being a drum major in the Greendale High School Band.

How was BOA considering it was your first year being a drum major?

BOA was incredible for my first time as drum major. Although I didn’t seem to get a lot of time to relax on the trip, the experiences I got made up for that. We got to meet tons of people from all across the nation, and it was interesting to listen to everyone else’s story.

What do you like best about being a drum major?

The thing that I like most about being a drum major is seeing the progress of the band throughout the year. Since I get to observe from a  different perspective, I get to see individuals and the band improve. Seeing new marchers improvement from the first day they walked in, all the way to Nationals, was such an amazing thing to see.

What are the duties of drum major?

Being a drum major has many responsibilities such as coming early, leaving late, making sure all the equipment is out, helping out others, and making sure rehearsals run smoothly.

Is it a lot of work to be a drum major?

Since there is so much to get done, it is a lot of work to be a drum major at times, but the positives definitely weigh out any negatives.

How do you manage your schedule with all of the time band takes up?

Throughout the year, I end up getting used to my schedule with band in it. I’m not missing any time being with friends, as most of my friends are in band. We are a lot more relaxed than most other bands, and our schedule is very manageable to me.

Do you think your first year of being a drum major went well? Why?

I think my first year went well, because I didn’t have many negative experiences. There have been plenty of times where I have personally been able to help someone out, which is what it’s all about for me.
