Girls Varsity season in Full Drive
November 19, 2017
Last week tryouts were held for the Girls Basketball team, and following tryouts the team had a couple of days to prepare for their first scrimmage last weekend.
The scrimmage was a sneak peek of what’s to come for the rest of the season. In the scrimmage they won the first game and lost the next two.
“It was nice to start off with a win for our first game of our scrimmage, but in the games we didn’t win,” junior Maria Courchane said. “We will fix what we did wrong in practice. I think this year will be better than last year because we have worked a lot in the summer and are implementing new plays to help us be more successful.”
Each player has her own personal goals for the season that she wants to achieve before the end of the season.
“My goal is to play my senior season with no regrets,” senior Gina Sommerfeld said.
Additionally, the team has things they want to improve on together that will help them have the best season possible.
“We will continue to work on basketball fundamentals and work on basketball smarts as well as learn to play as a single unit,” Sommerfeld said.
The team had their first game, beating Kenosha Indian Trail 48-36. Senior Annie Pulizos led the team in points, scoring 17 points, while seniors Cassidy Sanchez and Allyson Caballero both scored 9 points each.
The team is pleased with their performance in the first game.
“I think we performed well for it being our first game. This game really showed what we can work on for conference play,” sophomore Kayce Vaile said.
The team and coaches are aware of what needs to be done in order to keep winning games.
“We have a very competitive conference, some of the top teams will be New Berlin Eisenhower and Pewaukee,” varsity coach Tim Hogan said. “ We will need to play good team basketball, take care of the basketball, and limit turnovers to be successful. We will need to play great team defense and execute our half court offense.”
Keeping all these things in mind, the team knows they have a lot to work on and improve on so they can have a chance at State.
