New Year’s Day marked the last day of Winter Break for GHS students, who enjoyed celebrating the holiday and contemplating New Year’s resolutions.

Students shared their New Year’s traditions and celebrations.

“I celebrate New Year’s with my family every year at my Serbian school/ Church where we have a big New Year’s Party with many people and some of my old classmates,” freshman Jovana Pupovac explained. “We have Serbian Singers come to sing. Overall, it’s a big, fun party where my Serbian community and family all come together.”

Sophomore Abigail Sauvageau states, “I celebrate New Year’s by going to my friends house or having family over and playing games until midnight.”

Senior Cassidy Kramp brings in the New Year with her friends and family as well.

“I celebrate New Year’s by spending time with my friends and family and eating a lot of good food,” she said.

Freshman Margaret Arndorfer and junior Michaela Sarenac share similar traditions.

“I also usually hang out with friends and watch the ball drop in New York on TV,” Arndorfer said.

My family and I always watch the ball drop on New Year’s and we enjoy singing along to all the artists that perform during the show,” Sarenac said.

Students express their opinion about celebrating the New Year.

“I think that people see the new year as an opportunity to get together and celebrate the past year, as well as to look forward to the next,” Arndorfer said.

“I think it is celebrated globally because it’s an awesome opportunity for people to spend time with the ones they care about and bringing us together,” Kramp explained. “Also because everyone simply wants to celebrate the fact that we have made it through another year no matter how hard it was.”

“New Year’s is celebrated globally because it is something that is not based on culture or background, it’s the calendar. It is special because different people come together to celebrate and have a good time together,” Sauvageau said.

Although some students generally break their New Year’s Resolution, Kramp, Pupovac and Arndorfer hope to keep theirs throughout the year.

“My new year’s resolution is to stay hydrated every day because I’m really bad at continuously drinking water,” Kramp said.

“My New Year’s Resolution is to be more productive and positive. Although it’s kind of typical, it’s truly something I will be working on this year for the good of me and my future,” Pupovac explained. “I will also be practicing more for volleyball and soccer because I would like to make the school teams for both! And finally, I’ll be working harder for school, keeping up my good grades because college is only a couple years away.”

“I am going to try to stay updated on the news more than I did last year,” Arndorfer said.

Students explain how they will differ 2018 from previous years.

“I am going to work on my relationships with friends and family. Hopefully it is different than 2017 because I’ve had some drama in my life that was super stressful and upsetting, in which ruined my mood and plans all the time,” Sauvageau explained.

“In 2018 I plan on trying to not just make myself better, but to try to make the world around me better as well,” Kramp said. “I think 2018 will be different from 2017 because I’ll be graduating and starting college, that in itself is a huge step that I know the senior class is ecstatic to take.”

Pupovac expresses her plan about how she will change for the better of 2018 for herself.

“As I am getting older I see things differently and how little time we have to do what we really want to do and succeed in it. This year, I would like to make sure that everyday I wake up and try to be more positive, more productive and all in all more grateful for what I have. I want to make sure I celebrate the good I accomplish this year, instead of the bad,” Pupovac explained.  “I want to make sure that I am a better person, thinking more positively, and being kinder to people and myself. I just really want to succeed and make sure that I do everything I can do to live a happier and more productive life.”

Finally, the students epitomize what a new year means to them.

“A New Year is another chance I have to travel or spend time with my loved ones. You never know how many more new years you’ll have with someone,” Sarenac explained

“I see the New Year as an opportunity to have a fresh start and to reflect on your past year,” Arndorfer said.

“I see the New Year as a fresh start in the respect that it is a new chance to start over and change for the better,” Kramp said.

“I think of it as a new year is an opportunity to fix all the things you did wrong or to improve from the last year. I think that if you think of the new year as a fresh start it can open more opportunities as well,” Pupovac said.
