75th Golden Globes filled with historic events

January 14, 2018
The Golden Globes took place at the Beverly Hilton of this year, with over a thousand people attending the event and over 19 million viewers. There were 26 winners and 100 nominees both for tv shows and movies and actresses/actors.
Almost every woman that attended the Golden Globes this year wore black for the Time’s Up movement to make a statement.
The Time’s Up movement is in response of #me too and is a movement to end sexual harassment. The logo for Time’s up says, “Time’s Up on silence. Time’s Up on waiting. Time’s Up on tolerating discrimination, harassment and abuse #TIMESUP”.
“I think it’s good that people are putting their voices out there, but Hollywood is where it all began so they’re contradicting. They say you should speak up, but don’t speak up if it’s going to get hurt you,” junior Kristen Gilmore said.
Some GHS staff watched the Golden Globes as well.
“This was a weird one for me. Usually, I’m all about the fashion, so having everyone in black made you notice all the details of the dresses, yet I loved the previous pops of color in awards shows past,” Film teacher Kate Wagner said. “But to see so many women making a statement together was really powerful.”
Seth Meyers from SNL hosted this year’s show and moving viewers thought he did a good job. Meyers made some comments about recent events this past year, such as the sexual harassment problems in Hollywood.
“I LOVE Seth Meyers from his SNL days and I thought he did a nice job addressing some of the elephants in the room, but not too many to be obnoxious,” Wagner said.
History was also made the night of the Golden Globes when Sterling K. Brown became the first black man to ever win a Golden Globe award for best actor in the tv drama series: This is Us. Winning alongside him for best actress was Elisabeth Moss for Handmaid’s Tale. Aziz Ansari also became the first Asian to ever win a Golden Globe for best actor in a tv comedy series for Master of None. Best actress went to Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel .
James Franco won best actor in a musical or comedy film for The Disaster Artist, and best actress went to Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird, which also won best musical or comedy motion picture award.
Best drama motion picture went to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and best actress went to Frances McDormand from this movie. Gary Oldman won best actor drama for Darkest Hour.
Allison Janney won best supporting actress in a motion picture for I, Tonya, and best supporting actor went to Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,.
For the award for best animated feature film went to Coco.
“Props to them; they deserve it,” Gilmore said.
Oprah Winfrey also made history by being the first ever black woman to win the Cecil B. DeMille award. All the winners gave their thank you speeches, but Winfrey’s speech moved people emotionally.
“I want all the girls watching to know: A new day is on the horizon. When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of the magnificent women and many of them are in this room tonight,” Winfrey said.
