Maze Runner: Death Cure a Hit with Audiences
February 12, 2018
The final installment of the popular Maze Runner series, Maze Runner: Death Cure opened in theatres Jan. 26 and has grossed $41 million so far.
This movie focuses on the main character, Thomas, who is portrayed by Dylan O’Brien, and how he and his allies are fighting against the society and saving his captured friends.
“I love that it is about two people being different and the cure for humanity. They have to choose to trust the government that performed experiments on them supposedly for the good of humanity or fight them and risk everything,” junior Michaela Sarenac said.
The first movie focused on Thomas and the other maze hostages finding their way out of the maze and fighting obstacles along the way.
The second movie was about them finding a way to live after escaping the maze and how different their society was and finding out the truth about why they can’t recall any memories and why the society is the way it is.
“Of course, like any good adventure, it is sad to see it come to an end. I believe though that all the best things are great because they know when to end,” Sarenac said.
The movie was initially supposed to come out last February, however O’Brien got seriously injured during one of his car stunts, so they had to stop production for 11 months while he recovered.
The Maze Runner films are based on the book series of the same name. Junior Mya Colon happened to read the book series and also watched the movies.
“I liked the books better. The movies are okay, and I love Dylan O’Brien and the rest of the cast, but the books had so much more detail in them,” she said. “The movie sort of had to rush through some really good parts and couldn’t explain some of the more important details of the story. I haven’t seen the third movie yet, but many of the things that happened to certain characters in the books either happen or happened to completely different characters in the second movie.”
Others just liked how it was action packed.
“I love the lack of boredom and it’s always action filled so I’m on the edge of my seat,” sophomore Van Nguyen said.
Colon and Nguyen both share an interest in the same character: Minho.
“My favorite character was Minho because in the books especially he was always sarcastic and seemed to have a joke for everything. He was also really brave throughout the series and kept everyone else in line,” Colon said.
Nguyen has a different reason why he’s her favorite.
“My favorite character is Minho because I love diversity and he’s Asian and I’m Asian and it shows representation in Hollywood,” she said.
Nguyen also explains how watching the movies at the movie theatre has become a tradition amongst her and her friends.
“So in this time it was just about kind of handling the scale and scope of this movie and doing a proper kind of send off to the characters, to the story and to the fans themselves,” director Wes Ball said in an interview with NME.com.
