Diversity week a big success

This week the Greendale High School Diversity Council has put together a theme for each day in order to celebrate the diversity in the school and around the world.

The Diversity Council originally wanted to have a Diversity Night, but they were worried about low attendance, so they decided to have a week where every day would be dedicated to a different type of diversity by providing more information about it.

Monday celebrated cultural diversity, Tuesday LGBT diversity, Wednesday disabilities and Thursday perspectives. Each day a few members of the council came together with principal Steve Lodes to make an announcement and sent out an email.  The member of the Diversity Council were very excited to share the work they’ve put into this week with everyone.

“My group specifically focused on Cultural Diversity and the main thing about tradition and ethnicities is spreading awareness,” junior Anya Nakonechna said.  “This matters so much to me because I am from Ukraine. I come from a country that is not popular because of its sorrowful history. I come from a land that is regarded as ‘another Slavic territory,’ and sharing with students the beauty of my nation makes my heart melt because I love talking about the place I come from.”

The council believes it’s important to celebrate the diversity because GHS is filled with people of different religions, sexualities, and races, and it’s important to make them feel welcomed.

“It’s important to celebrate diversity, not only because it brings us closer together, but allows us, as a society, to become stronger, despite any differences,” junior  Annie Terry said.

Students like the idea, but think that more can be done to celebrate diversity.“I don’t think we should be celebrating our differences every day and not just for one week,” sophomore Sophie Wehrhahn said.
