Horror Movies Aren’t For Everyone This Halloween
October 30, 2020
This weekend is Halloween, and that means it’s time to watch a horror movie right? Well, not necessarily. Although some people love to watch scary movies because it’s a spooky season, others simply don’t like them, and would rather watch a movie full of suspense, or even an animated Halloween movie.
Junior Arianna Velasquez has a favorite that she likes to watch every October. ¨Hocus Pocus is my favorite Halloween movie to enjoy because I get to enjoy it with my friends, relatives and siblings and it’s a really fun family movie,¨ she said.
Math teacher Sarah Holland enjoys watching Hocus Pocus as well. “I’m not a fan of horror films, but I love watching Hocus Pocus. I don’t watch it every year, but if I need anything to watch, I’ll turn it on.”
Because of the horrific incidents that arise, some Halloween movies are very unsettling for some people to watch. “Stuff that upsets me when I watch horror movies is all the murdering they’re doing and all the gore,” Velasquez said.
Holland also feels the same way about scary movies. ¨I am not a fan of scary movies, to the point that my husband is not allowed to have one on if I am in the room, or even if I can hear it from another room. I scare easily, and I just don’t enjoy them. I will fixate on the things that scare me,¨ she said. ¨When I was living alone, I saw the movie Black Swan and I was scared for days. Without wanting my reflection to do anything different than I did, I couldn’t look in the mirror!¨
Sign language teacher Jennifer McCauley isn’t a fan of films that are frightening either. ̈ I don’t like horror films. I jump too quickly. I make my children insane because I jump at EVERYTHING! ̈ she said. “I like more thriller/suspense than horror. I like trying to sort out things, but I don’t like killing and gore, ” she said.
When she was young, McCauley had a bad experience watching a horror movie. ¨I was so afraid of the Steven King movie Carrie. I remember seeing it at a middle school slumber party, and I had to leave the room,¨she said. “When they spilled the pigs’ blood on her head, the movie Carrie was very frightening.”
Guidance Secretary Stacy Derrick also prefers Halloween movies that aren’t about killing/gore. “I like to watch movies like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. In scary movies there is usually no real story. ‘Main character just wants to kill people’ doesn’t sound interesting to me. They are usually too gory, that’s not scary, it’s just disgusting,”she said. “The type of movies that I like to watch that aren’t scary/horror are Disney/animated movies. I like them because typically there is a problem presented, the story of how it’s worked through, and then there is a happy ending,¨
Junior Erin Yaccarino also feels the same way. ¨I like to watch early 2000s Disney movies. I’m not a big jump scare person. I like to watch movies with my family so if the majority likes it I’ll watch it,¨ she said.
So if you aren’t ready to get scared this weekend, there’s plenty of other options for you to watch this Halloween.
