The Team Wins Sectionals

The Pius-Greendale-Greenfield swim team has been making history this year, winning  all of their meets so far heading into the last weeks of the season. For the third time in a row, the co-op has beaten their biggest rival, Arrowhead, coming out on top as one of the highest ranked teams in the state.

While there is still much competition ahead, the team is heading in the right direction. On Saturday, Jan. 9, the co-op won the Marquette Invitational meet. This was a big meet to win for the team and Head Coach Dale Schrank was excited about how well the team did. “In a meet with a 27 year history of the top swimmers in Wisconsin, and even a number of the top swimmers from surrounding states, that is no small feat,” he said. “This was the perfect meet to set up both the Woodland Conference and the Sectional and State meets, all coming within the next 4 weeks. It is hard to believe that the season will be over in only 26 days.”

Leading up to this meet, the team has been practicing 6 days a week and running two practices a day most days. “I think double practice is helpful because it helps us get a lot more training in especially during the shortened season,”  Vinnie Patti, a senior at GHS said.

Senior Aaron Shibilski agrees. “I think that the double practices have been very helpful as it not only gives more time for hard training but also technique work as well. I feel like at the Marquette invite I did very well and should lead towards success at the end of the season,” he  stated.

Although the season has gone well, the season was shortened which was disappointing for many swimmers. “Training wasn’t as good since we had a lot less time in the year and we were supposed to do a lot of different things with different meets which would have helped with more practice,” Patti said.

“With the extra training at the end of the year, the performance results would be even better,” mentioned Shibilski.
