Boys Basketball Season Coming To An End
February 16, 2021
Now that February has begun, the boys basketball season is coming to an end. This year has been filled with changes with the covid guidelines as well as struggles, promising moments, and much more.
The Panthers season started off promising, and after the first 14 games the team was 7-7. Recently, however, the team has struggled as they start the important month of February.
The team is currently 9-12, with three more regular season games left until playoffs. Senior captain Will Brust spoke on the team’s recent struggles. “This year was a rollercoaster. We had players injured and quit, and also team chemistry struggles,” he said. “With all the problems developing, we have still been able to compete with the best teams in our conference, and even state.”
Coming off two rough losses to Pewaukee, the Panthers took on Waukesha North Monday night and won 67-49. Included with the big victory, senior Will Brust scored his 1000th career varsity point with a three pointer in the second half. Brust spoke on the achievement. “It felt great and the support from my teammates’ parents and school was awesome,”he said.
Senior captain Nick Churchill spoke on his goals for the team going forward. “For the remainder of the season everyone needs to step up. This is our senior and we never know what can happen,” he said.
One of the things that made the season difficult was the fact that there weren’t many fans, A as every player is only able to invite two spectators for the game. The players really miss having a student section for their games.
Senior Jonny Hottinger, was lucky enough to attend a couple of games. “I’ve only got the pleasure to go to a couple games, but it’s a thrill. I love cheering on my boys and going at it with the other team,” he said.
Greendale students are no longer able to end the basketball games, so hopefully with the new in-person school schedule those terms will eventually end. The Panthers hope to make a successful playoff run starting monday, against Cudahy.
