Spring football begins this week
March 25, 2021
In a normal year, the spring would not include the sport of football, but with Covid-19 impacting many things, Greendale High School’s football team will have a spring season, and the team started practice on March 8. The first game is this Friday, so it is coming back fast.
One of the most important parts of a football game is the fans and its student section, and this season fans will be chosen by raffle, with around 50 seniors, and 20 each of juniors, sophomores and freshmen.
Senior Jonny Hottinger, who has been a huge participant in the student sections for the past three years, has mixed feelings about the raffle.“Honestly, that’s a bigger group than I thought would happen. The only problem is many might participate in the raffle, but actually going to the games. That’s really the only problem,” Hottinger stated.
One of the main differences will be the teams that the Panthers will face. Junior Will Vaile discusses the strength of schedule. “This year we face easier teams that are on the other side of the Woodland mostly, like Greenfield, South Milwaukee, and Cudahy,” he said. “This year we don’t get to play Eisenhower which kind of sucks.”
Eisenhower and Greendale were always a good matchup, but they played the spring season.
Senior Abdallah Quesam discusses the way in which Covid-19 has affected his senior year football season. “It was kinda hard to get warmed up into the season because we were unable to go to camps and stuff, but not much has really changed within the actual football,” he said.
The first game of the year was scheduled against South Milwaukee, but then was changed to Racine Case due to covid issues within South Milwaukee’s team. These are just one of the few issues that covid has brought to high school sports.
Junior Nathan Dineen is really happy that the team was able to find an opponent. “At first I was upset hearing the game got cancelled. Once we realized that we still had to play a game everyone was super ecstatic,” he said.
With the first game against Racine Case this Friday (March 26), the Panthers look to continue their tradition of winning.
