Despite Homecoming Week being cancelled earlier this fall due to Covid-19, Greendale Student Council created a memorable Homecoming experience this spring.

Although there wasn’t a dance, the Student Council set up creative events for students to attend such as spirit days, a drive-in movie night, a powderpuff game, football game, and Food Truck Frenzy. All of these events helped to create a somewhat normal and exciting Homecoming week.

The week started off with five different themed spirit days for students and staff. Monday began the week with hat day. Many students participated with hats ranging from everyday baseball hats to sombreros and cowboy hats. Tuesday was beach themed, and there were many leis and Hawaiian shirts worn. Wednesday was pajama day for the virtual half day, Thursday was taken over by class colors, and on Friday the school showed their school spirit with green, white, and black.

On Wednesday, the school hosted a Drive-In movie night for students to park and enjoy a night of snacks and movies. The Drive-In showcased The Black Panther, which is perfectly fitting for the school mascot. Junior Chloe Coombs attended the movie with some of her friends. “There were more people than I thought there was going to be,” Coombs said. “My first thought about the event was that it was going to be boring, but I think the Student Council did a really good job of making sure the events were fun and memorable.”

Student Council adviser Zach Geiger was in charge for Wednesday night’s movie night. “I think the night was a great success! Though it was a little chilly, the picture/sound quality were excellent and you cannot argue with Black Panther as a movie,” Geiger said. Despite the weather, there was a good turnout of about 100 students.

Thursday showcased the annual Powder Puff game for senior girls, and was between the red and the blue team. Each team had 18 players, with the final score of 47-6. The red team took the strong victory for this year’s game.

Red team members cheer on their teammates to victory.

Senior Maddie Filetti played on the Red Team for this game. “Even though we didn’t have a normal Homecoming week, it was good to keep the powder puff tradition going,” Filetti said. “It was nice to have a little normalcy for the seniors because we already missed so many other traditions!”

The Homecoming football game is something that everybody looks forward to each year. Students and players were upset when there was no Homecoming dance or game earlier this year, but people were definitely excited for our school’s rescheduled game this spring. And the team did not disappoint, beating West Allis Hale 24-0.

Junior Zach Sheridan is a big fan of going to the football games. “I would say the game seemed normal, there were a lot of students there which made chants more fun even while being socially distanced,” he said.

For the week’s last event, the school hosted a Food Truck Frenzy. Originally, the event was supposed to be held in the back parking lot for kids to walk around and enjoy different foods, but with the cold weather it was changed to the front loop of the school and the MPR for indoor seating. The event had different food trucks ranging from burgers at Milk Can Diner, to barbeque pork and chicken from Double B’s Barbeque and there were even some healthier options from Clean Cuisine.

The event ran from 4-7 p.m. Saturday night, and was a great way to end the improvised Homecoming week. Student Council adviser Kate Wagner advised this event for students, and felt that it was a fun night. “We had a steady stream of people throughout the three hours, and it was fun to try so many different foods,” she said.

Junior Alyssa Dorava attended the event Saturday night and enjoyed food with some friends. “Milk Can Diner was my favorite food truck there, and I loved the atmosphere where I could just sit and talk with my friends and enjoy some good food.” Dorava said.

Although Homecoming Week looked very different this year, students were still able to have a creative and enjoyable week of fun activities thanks to the Greendale Student Council and GHS staff.
