The holidays are a time for people to come together and relax on their brief amount of days off, and GHS students and staff are no exception, finding lots of fun ways to spend the holidays and that comes in many different forms.

Some students find pleasure in staying home and spending quality time with their family. It’s a simple, yet relaxing way to spend the holiday break. “I’m looking forward to spending time with friends and family. I enjoy watching Christmas movies and drinking hot chocolate with my family as well,” junior Tony Galusha said.

For seniors at GHS, some may receive acceptance letters from colleges in the mail during winter break which is a very exciting time for them. “Over Christmas break I’m most likely going to hear from some colleges I applied to. I will most likely be hearing from Chapman, Loyola, Marymount, and the University of Texas,” senior Tommy Young said.

During the long break, some students may use the time to travel around the country, or even the world, with their family and friends. Whether it may be local or international, traveling is a great way to spend the holidays. English teacher Kate Wagner is going to Panama with fellow GHS teachers Megan Faherty and Mary Guida. “I planned travel itineraries during the pandemic as a coping mechanism, and Panama was a happy surprise! It is such a great value! We have a house to ourselves with a rooftop patio and pool in Panama City, plus we will tour the canal,” she said. “There is also a Gehry-designed museum, and I love his architecture. We will then fly to Bocas del Toro where we have a house that is over the water, so we can snorkel from our dock and also has a pool in the back.”

Senior Keyona Miller is also going out of the country to Mexico this holiday break.

“I am going to Cancun with my Dad and younger sisters. I am excited because I’ve never been there before and we’re going to go swimming with dolphins and horseback riding on the beach,” she said.

While some students decide to travel around the state or even the country, some students decide to stay local. Spending the holidays with friends and family around Greendale is a great way to spend the holidays. “I will probably be staying in Greendale for most of the holidays. I will also be visiting my grandparents on Christmas Eve,” senior Tori Donnelly said.

For some people, they may have a family member who’s birthday is during the holidays. This could mean that they travel or do something special for that person’s birthday. “We are going to be staying in the downtown area of Chicago for two days. While we’re there, we’re going to celebrate my mom’s birthday and my aunt is also coming along too. We’ll be attending this big christmas festival that takes place in downtown Chicago each year,” junior Eliana Kiltz said.

A long break like this only comes around a couple times each year. So when this time comes around, students and teachers take full advantage of the holidays. Have a fun and safe holiday break!
