Just like any other sport, the Girls Varsity Volleyball program has had its ups and downs, with a current record of 6-21 this year so far. This season, there have been new first-year starters, but also veterans that help when it comes to making the team work as a whole.
This is junior Olivia Kaltenbach’s first year on varsity. “This leap to variety is definitely challenging, but nothing I can’t handle; the only thing we can do for the rest of this season is stay positive and have fun,” she said.
Junior captain Addison Benning thinks the team has things to work on but are learning to work together. “A weakness is that we all come from different backgrounds in volleyball, so sometimes it’s harder to all get on the same level. One of our strengths is that we are a very close team; we all get along and can have fun at practices,” she said.
Greendale volleyball is in the Woodland-West conference where they currently stand in 6th place. One of their toughest conference matches was against Pewaukee. “Pewaukee was definitely our hardest competition this season, but it was a good game to play,” Benning said.
One of their best efforts came against Wisconsin Lutheran on September 12. Greendale played their hearts out, but they still came up short, losing 3 sets to 1. “I think our best match this year was definitely Wisco; it was such a great game, and even though we lost, we all had so much fun playing that game,” sophomore Kayleigh Kowallke said
Junior Billie Reiter agrees “I think our best game was against Wisco. We played really hard and competed, and even though we didn’t win, it was fun to all play together and have one of our best games,” she said.
Currently, Benning is leading the team with 150 kills, and junior Kendal Coggins is leading the team in digs with 172.
