Although Homecoming was over a month ago, many students are still feeling the effects of getting sick after the dance, calling it the post-HOCO disease.
Homecoming took place on Sept. 16 at Greendale High School with the theme of the dance being Dreamland. Students said the dance was very fun. “The music was good and I had a lot of fun,” sophomore Mya Taugher said.
But, many students happened to get sick after the dance. Like junior Lukas Gamroth.“While waiting in line to get into the dance, I heard lots of people saying that they feel sick already,” he said.
Gamroth wasn’t the only one that got sick. “I liked spending time with my friends, but a lot of us ended up getting sick after Homecoming,” sophomore Sophie Latus said.
Attendance Secretary Jenny Taylor talked about the uptick in absences of sick students after Homecoming. “A lot of students were out, probably triple what we normally have,” she said.
This affected a lot of students who had to go to the nurse’s office and be sent home or called in. “A lot of my friends weren’t here and my classes were kind of empty,” sophomore Brayden Dolkiewicz said.
Teachers noticed the absences as well. “The dance was inside with hundreds of students and the sickness could spread quickly from germs. This affected my plans for class that day because I would have to make last-minute adjustments since there were so many people out,” Physical Education teacher Ryan Fiet said.
