After years of misery in the Colorado football program, they decided to make a change and hired retired NFL cornerback Deion Sanders as their head coach. Along with Deion Sanders came some high profile transfers such as 5-star athlete, Travis Hunter, and polarizing quarterback, Shedur Sanders.
With many doubters to come into the season, the team started it off with a bang. After being scheduled to play the reigning runner-up national champions, Texas Christian University, people doubted them. Due to some crazy performances from Sanders and Hunter, Colorado came out with a 45-42 win. After that people knew Colorado was for real..
Most people think the key to Colorado’s success is all the transfers and Coach Prime but others think it’s something else. “I think that the key is the respect the Colorado players have for Coach Prime and their loyalty to him,” sophomore Peter Geitmann said. “They also play with a lot of heart and swagger, which I think makes them that much cooler.”
With all the new transfers that came in, a few of them have helped draw attention to the Colorado football program. “I think that Shedur should transfer because he is a lot better than most PAC-12 QB’s,” Geitmann said. “I can easily see him being a top quarterback in the Big 10 or SEC.”
They have had some big matchups as the season starts to wind down, one being against USC and their Heisman winning quarterback, Caleb Williams. “Although they lost, it was a great game. Although Colorado didn’t have Travis (Hunter), they still kept it close to heavyweight USC,” sophomore Marquis Norris said. “With Shedur and Caleb being high volume scorers, both scoring four touchdowns, it just came down to who messed up less.”
Out of all the things Colorado switched up, the most obvious change was the coaching change and acquiring Deion Sanders as head coach. He has been leading them to success that they haven’t had in a while.
“He is ‘Prime Time Deion Sanders!’ He can be polarizing, but yet he has always been a winner and people respect that,” teacher Andrew Muszytowski said. “Sometimes a sport or a team needs a reboot and he is exactly what Colorado needed. The team will have its ups and downs, as seen by their losses, but he brings a certain ‘We can do this’ to Colorado, which can be very exciting for the fan base.”
With winnable matchups coming down the road, Colorado could make a bowl game for the first time since 2020. For them to achieve that, their star players are going to have to step up.
