Once again the UW-Madison women’s volleyball team is having a very successful year. In 2021 they won the national championship and they are hoping to pursue that again this year. They are the number 2 team in the nation and they have only lost one game, to Nebraska who is now the number 1 team in the nation.
“I think they’re doing well in conference and I think their post season is going to be hard playing other teams from other conferences. I think it’s cool that some people are following thor games and watching volleyball more,” junior Billie Reiter said.
The team has been building their fan base. “Over the years they’re doing well which makes more people want to watch volleyball and their breaking records which is making young female athletes want to play volleyball. Their record shows they should be number 2 in the nation but they also don’t play teams from other conferences so it’s hard to judge that,” Reiter said.
Junior Addison Benning follows the team and has a favorite player. “Sarah Franklin is my favorite player because she had a big impact on the team. I think they deserve to be ranked number two because if they were number one they would have beat Nebraska but they did not,” she said. “Because they come out of such a good and positive environment, it shows the sport has many good aspects like the team. The positive vibe they put out makes volleyball more popular.”
Wisconsin volleyball also broke the record for the most attendance at an indoor volleyball match when they played at Marquette Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on Sept. 13. “I think they are doing really well but I think they could still improve by how they performed last year. I also think they could be number one again. I think it makes volleyball more popular because they all show their passion for the sport and young girls want to be like them,” junior Ava Schroeder said.
