Thanksgiving week is the prime week for deer hunting and students at Greendale High School want every part of it.
Senior Jonah Davis went hunting this year and shot a 6 point buck. Davis finds rifles as the easiest method if someone is looking to hunt. “I’ve been hunting since the 6th grade with my Savage model .223 rifle,” said Davis “I’ve gotten 5 deer throughout my years yet every time I get the same adrenaline rush,”.
In the 2023 deer roundup for Wisconsin the DNR registered 173,942 deer that were confirmed to be shot. This number seems to be less compared to 2022 when the DNR confirmed 205,251. Overall the top countries for deer kills were Marathon, Vernon, and Shawano.
The Wisconsin deer hunting season ended with only three non-fatal injuries. This is a decrease to the ten year average in which the average injury rate is 5.9.
Senior Mason Kode hunts up towards Hayward Wisconsin on his family’s land. Unlike most people who choose to bait for deer or sit along the outer ridge of a cornfield; Kode does call for deer or he tends to sit and watch.
“My favorite part would probably be continuing the family tradition and finally getting a deer if I see one,” Kode said.
Mason Kode looks forward to plenty more hunts ahead and carrying on the tradition in his family of going hunting each year. Although he did not get anything this year he hopes next year will be something special.
