Wrestling season started last month, and a lot of athletes are excited to have a successful season. The wrestling team hopes to carry the success from last year, as multiple players made state. Greendale is also combined with Whitnall for wrestling, and call themselves Whitdale.
On Dec. 2 the team competed in the Blashshirt Invite at Waukesha South. Overall, the team did well and beat Martin Luther 48-33 in round 1. In round 2, they received a bye and then win round 3 beating Waukesha South 59-22. Finally, they beat Racine St. Catherine’s/Lutheran in round 5.
Senior Noah Koss is one of the wrestlers that made it to State last year and he is hoping to keep the positive record going. His record reached 18-1 when he wrestled for first place in the finals at the Stech tournament last weekend.
“I have confidence in myself that I can make it again this year. I just have to keep improving and pushing myself. I am way better than I was last year and this year will show it,” he said.
Sophomore Noah Lofy is also a returning athlete that made it so state. He thinks that improvement and talent all comes from teammates and what happens in practice. “We have a lot of talent to compete. What really bonds us together is how we push each other during practice. That is how we improve as players,” he said.
Something unique about wrestling is that the athletes need to either lose or gain weight to compete at different weight classes. One of those athletes is sophomore Deacon Ward, who has to lose weight. His goal is to cut to 190 for wrestling.
“My favorite thing about the sport is that it’s only you. Your effort determines if you win or loose and no other sport has that which makes wrestling beautiful,” Ward said.
