Students interested in the medical field went with science teacher Jessica Holschbach on a HIT (Health Immersion Trip) on Feb 22 to St. Luke’s Hospital. During this visit, students met with 10 different people who hold various positions within the hospital.
“The intent was to expose students to the multitude of career opportunities within a hospital setting,” Hoslchbach said. “There are many different specialities and routes that a young medical professional can take to get to a place of excelling in a medical setting.”
Students who went on this field trip are interested in careers in the medical field, and they described this field trip as an opportunity to meet with different professionals at the hospital to get a more in-depth look at certain career paths.
“On the field trip we did group discussions, small group walks around tables that had a specific medical field, and we talked for about seven minutes at each station with professionals in that field,” junior Tess Zaja said.
Students had favorites among the 10 different people they visited with.
“I spoke with different people in oncology, nurses, and radiology, and my favorite person was the physician’s assistant because that’s what I want to do when I’m older, ” junior Callie Morzy said.
Zaja agreed in this being favorite speaker as well. “One person that I talked with was an orthopedic physician’s assistant and she told us many interesting stories of the types of patients she works with and what she does in her daily life,” she said.
Students also had the opportunity to do a few activities in addition to the discussions they had. “The most interesting experience was drilling into a fake bone,” Morzy said.
The success of the field trip brings in a hope for another opportunity to visit again. “St. Luke’s has wonderful programs to help students learn about what career they are most interested in and tuition assistance to help students. We are hopeful that another trip can occur next fall for students that want to learn more about a medical career,” Holschbach said.
