As the middle of the swim team season at GHS approaches, the team has been working hard so far. Last year the team was led by Coach Melanie Borland, but since then, the team has gotten three new coaches; Head Coach Grace Bodus and Assistant Coaches Mary Jo, and David Turner.
“The new coaches are great. They have been really trying their hardest to keep the same atmosphere as past years and are willing to try new things which is a great thing and something I think the team will be needing this year,” senior Chloe Yerkes said.
In the first month of the swim season, the pool started having mechanical issues. There was no practice allowed, which made things challenging. This made things difficult for the team because the girls had to drive to the Village Club every day and practice outside.
“It’s been a rough start to the season with the mechanical issues! Luckily we have the Village Club here in Greendale and they were kind enough to let us use their pool,” Bodus said. “It was a good lesson in being resilient as we couldn’t change it and just had to work with what we were given.”
So far, the team’s meets have consisted of dual or invite meets. During dual meets, the team has beaten Greenfield, West Allis, and New Berlin Eisenhower.
“Our varsity team this year is a lot smaller so all the varsity girls will really be able to focus on their individual events and have more fun not worrying about points because of our lack of numbers,” Yerkes said.
While the team struggles with numbers, trying to rack up as many points as possible is still the team goal. Teamwork is a huge part of this and often directs the girls to the right mindset.
“I think the team could benefit from just continuing to push each other as a whole group. I believe we should strive to bring others up with us instead of bringing them down because we are a team,” sophomore Bailey Sowa said.
