The marching band competition season has begun and the band has performed at Wheeling high school in Illinois and Waukesha South. They did very well at both competitions.
This year the show is called T2 and features music from Taylor Swift and Tchaikovsky. Some songs played by Taylor Swift are “Look What You Made Me Do,” “Say You’ll Remember Me,” and “Trouble.”
Band has played lots of different types of music from tons of different artists over the years, and it’s always a hit, but this year this aritist has a huge fan base at GHS.
“I just love Tchaikovsky, because I love classical music. The 1812 overture, is my favorite part of it,” senior band memberBetsy Potkay said.
While everyone is striving to make an impact on the band they also are working to improve themselves.
“The only thing we can control at competitions is our own performance, so our goal is to perform as well as we possibly can at all shows, including state. As long as we do the best we can, that’s all that matters,” band director Thomas Reifenberg said.
Reifenberg thought their first competition was a good first representation of their hard work.
“We strive to improve every time we run through the show, whether it’s rehearsal or performance. If every member makes just one thing better each time they perform the show, we’ll continue to make progress over the course of the season,” Reifenberg said.
The upperclassmen in band have been leaders to the team but still strive to improve. Junior Zane Morris thinks there are multiple ways to improve before the next competition.
“Keeping in time with the drum line and making sure that our step sizes are all equal,” Morris said.
Heading into their band competition this weekend, the band members are feeling confident and prepared to perform. They are putting in the work to keep the winning streak alive.
“I feel like we are going to do very well because we are already at a good start,” junior Liliana Eland said.
A lot of people think being in a band is easy, but what they don’t know is that while they’re performing they have to do fast costume changes.
“One of my favorite things about performing is the costume changes because I feel like we make a strong entry, it shocks the audience, and really grabs their attention,” Potkay said.
