As the girls tennis season starts to wind down some of the players are excited to be playing their last couple of matches. With a mix of girls playing since they’ve been in high school to fresh new talent from the incoming freshman, the team has been able to show their skill and resilience on the court.
On Oct. 1 and 2 th team played in the conference championship. The first day it was held at the Greendale Village Club and on the second day they played here at the Greendale High School, placing 3rd overall.
Junior, Lucy Mermal, played #1 doubles with Keira Hickey during the championship. “I think I did well. The last match I played was one of the best I’ve ever done,” Mermal said.
“Being a captain of a tennis team is a little bit different because the sport is mostly an individual competition. To be a leader for my team, it’s really important to set a good example for the rest of the girls,” team captain Quinn Steinman said. “That includes cheering each other on when they’re playing, making sure everyone stays positive, and having information about times and matches to send out to everyone.”
As the team creeps their way closer to making it to their sectional and state games they are all focusing on ways they can improve.
“My biggest accomplishment would probably be improving my overall technique in tennis. My form for groundstrokes and serves has improved since the seasons start and has made me a better player,” senior Valeria Whaley said.
The girls tennis team recognizes the importance of having a close bond with everyone and strengthens communication so the team can work together. Being there for each other encourages the team to perform better and creates a positive environment where everyone feels welcomed.
“I’ve played tennis with the Greendale team for three years now,” junior Hickey said. “The team has been non stop supportive of each other and I can see a huge improvement in our matches.”
The team has recently celebrated senior night honoring Steinman, Whaley, Colette Booth, and Aubrey Jorgenson.
“I am so happy to be a part of such a supportive team. It has really changed my high school experience for the better,” Booth said.
