The World Series ended earlier this month and the Dodgers won the series over the Yankees 4-1.
The Dodgers and Yankees both came into the playoffs as favorites to make it to the championship so many fans were excited. This series was speculated to be one of the best, considering the history between these teams and being some of the most popular franchises in the world. They had the second and third highest payrolls in the league, both producing some of the best lineups in the world.
“The amount of money an owner has really affects how good a team can be,” freshman Bennett McNulty said.
Dodgers player Teoscar Hernández, who showed up at the end of the regular season, continued his gameplay as he hit .350 in the World Series.
“Players who are getting on base during the most crucial games of the season are contributing more than people think,” freshman Sam Eggert said.
Dodgers star Freddie Freeman suffered a high ankle sprain on Sept. 26 that could’ve caused him to miss the entire playoffs, but instead he came back and played very well, hitting .300 and the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history in game one. He ended up winning World Series MVP and was a big reason the Dodgers had success.
“The Dodgers had a lot of success because of their clutch players that turn a game around really fast,” freshman Bryce Carlson said.
Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani suffered a subluxation in his right shoulder during game 2 of the World Series. Even though he played through it, his shoulder definitely affected him as he hit .105 In the series. The Dodgers proved that even with Shohei not performing, they are still the best team in the league.
One of the reasons the Yankees lost was because they didn’t get production out of their stars. Aaron Judge ended the World Series hitting .184 in the playoffs. He also struck out 20 times in 49 at-bats and committed an error in game 5 that turned the game around. Even though he played incredible in the regular season, he was probably the biggest reason the Yankees couldn’t get it done.
“If Aaron Judge performed, this series could’ve been a lot closer,” Eggert said.
The Dodgers had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth in game 1, Freddie Freeman hit a walk off grand slam and that’s when the Yankees started to crumble. Down 3-0 in the series, the Yankees fought back and won game 4. In game five, the Yankees had a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, but they went on to have one of the worst defensive performances in playoff history, starting with Judge missing a routine line drive right to him. Then shortstop Anthony Volpe threw a bad throw to third that resulted in nobody out. Then a ground ball was hit to first baseman Anthony Rizzo but pitcher Gerrit Cole did not cover first base. So again all runners were safe.
“The Dodgers just proved themselves that they are the undisputed best team in the league,” McNulty said.
With a big free agency ahead, combined with the money the Dodgers can spend, they can turn this World Series into many more to come.
