After an extremely difficult schedule, the soccer team season ended Oct 26 with a loss to Elkhorn in the playoffs 1-0. Finishing third in the Conference with a 3-2-2 record, many wouldn’t think it was a successful season, but with them having one of the hardest schedules in the state, playing nationally ranked teams, and playing non-conference teams like Brookfield East, Waukesha West, Nicolet, and Oak Creek, they still found positives in their season.
One big highlight in the season was beating Waterford in the WIAA playoffs 3-0. Senior Brady McCravens knew that it was a big game and showed up for it as he had two assists.
“We all knew how important that game was so when we were able to pull off the win, It gave us a lot of confidence as we moved on in the playoffs,” McCravens said.
Another player who had a huge role was senior Caden Meyer. Being a goalkeeper who the team had to rely on in every game, came with a lot of pressure. Being one of the best goalkeepers in the conference with numerous clean sheets, Meyer had certain rituals to help him succeed this season.
“The pasta parties helped the team focus for every game and focus on winning,” Meyer said. “Listening to music also helped me prepare for games and get into the right state of mind.”
Because many seniors will be leaving next year, underclassmen have to step up and lead the team. With a lot of talent leaving the team, Greendale is expected to have a tough year, having their whole midfield and most of the Panther’s defense graduating. Sophomore Ryan Hajewski thinks it will be tough, but he will be prepared.
“I am really excited for next year and think we will have another great season,” Hajewski said, “But with all the seniors leaving it will definitely be a challenge.”
But as the season ended seniors have been forced to move on. Senior Giancarlo Lechuga is thankful he was able to play for Greendale Soccer varsity all four years.
“I am just thankful that I was able to be a leader and come out of my senior season with a successful season. Being able to play my favorite sport and having my friends show up for me at my games will be something I’ll never forget” Lechuga said.
