Saturday Night Live has been on air since 1975 and has recently been getting popular again, especially with teens.
The show consists of a new host every week and a musical guest, who then create funny sketches about current pop culture events. SNL has been awarded 103 Emmy awards, the most of any television series.
The show’s recent popularity with teens has a lot to do with its sketches being clipped and posted to TikTok, where many teens see and share them.
Some students in GHS don’t necessarily watch SNL but are seeing it gain popularity and are getting interested in it.
“I don’t watch SNL but I see clips on TikTok, I think it’s funny and I want to see more of it,” junior Audrey Cullen said.
Another reason SNL has been gaining popularity is the guest hosts, with people like Ariana Grande, Timothee Chalamet, and Billie Eilish being involved in the show.
“When I see celebrities I know on the show, it makes me more interested in watching it,” senior Alex Holthaus said.
The show’s most trending sketches at the moment are a spoof on the popular song “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, including Ariana Grande singing off-key, and a skit of Maya Rudolph impersonating Kamala Harris.
“I thought the lady pretending to be Kamala Harris was really funny,” said junior Marquis Norris Jr.
Junior Lauren Gilbert thinks the show’s sudden popularity is due to its skits on current political events.
“I think more people have been watching it because they’ve been doing political skits during the election, and that’s a really hot topic right now,” she said.
SNL has been able to stay relevant and entertaining for many years and continues to be to this day.
