The smell of popcorn will fill the air every Friday during both lunches thanks to the Poppin’ Panthers.
Special education transition coordinator teacher Katie Keast and the students pop the popcorn and sell it to students for $1. Keast explained the benefits of these types of activities for the students.
“This activity is a fundraiser for special education services to help get kids ready for life after high school. All the money raised goes to replenish all the supplies and what we make with the extra money is used to go on a fun recreational field trip,” Keast said.
GHS students are taking the time to help make, fill, and open bags of popcorn.
“I like helping out and filling the bags. It makes me feel productive and I enjoy being out of class,” junior Elsi Ayala said.
“I open the bags and fill them with popcorn. I wish I was selling the popcorn but other students are doing that and I like working with people,” senior Lucas Alvarado said.
All they do to make this delicious popcorn combine is popcorn seeds, canola oil, and popcorn salt. Simple, yet tasty. Students seem to be enjoying it so far as well.
“For only being $1 the popcorn was really good. It was very buttery and salty, but not too much. I would definitely buy it again,” junior Alfonso Crespo-Beaudot said.
This is a very valuable experience for students who participate in the micro-business because they will learn the following skills: collaboration, communication, problem solving, sales/advertising, creativity, money management and identification, customer service, teamwork, flexibility, social skills, greetings, eye contact, form relationships with staff, navigate the building, and so much more.
Poppin’ panthers will be selling popcorn to students every Friday during both lunches all year long, so please consider supporting them.
