The 2024 Presidential election was a significant moment in American history. Citizens throughout the whole country voted to choose the future leader of the nation. The 2024 presidential election resulted in Donald J. Trump beating Kamala Harris in the race. Donald Trump had 312 electoral votes compared to Kamala with 226 beating her by 86 votes.
“At first I was upset because I did not support Trump, but after learning more about his policies and who he is electing for certain positions I am happy with it”, said senior Kallie Lapointe.
While tensions were at a high due to the election, both sides were advertising their campaigns to gain supporters. Many young minds are influenced by advertisements for campaigns on apps such as Twitter, Instagram, or Tiktok. It is essential for parties to promote their campaign on different platforms to reach different audiences from different age groups.
“I follow Donald Trump on Instagram because I like keeping up with him and his party,” said senior Devin Isaj.
Shortly before the election results were finalized, our school held a mock election. The mock election imitates the actual election by giving students the opportunity to vote for who they would vote for in the actual election. Some students who are not of age to vote yet do still want to understand the maturity and seriousness level an election takes. Due to these reasons, social studies teacher Benjamin Hubing has been performing a mock election since 2008.
“The purpose of the mock election is to help students understand how elections work and get some experience with the voting process before they vote in actual elections. Students also get to have a say and voice, even if not officially, in who they think is the best choice”, Hubing said
