GHS girls basketball is starting off their season with a new coaching staff and is excited to have a JV and varsity team this year.
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, the team headed to Franklin and ended with a victory 57-53
“I feel that the team did really well against Franklin. It was a special moment because Greendale girls basketball hasn’t beat Franklin in years, so for our team to beat them proves that we played well,” junior Tatiyana Edwards said.
The girl’s basketball team is going to have some tough competition this year across multiple teams.
“Peawaukee has a really strong program and Pius is going to be tough this year because they have good shooters, and Eisenhower also has a good coach,” JV coach Darek Nelson said.
The basketball team is going to have to work very hard this year to improve from last year.
“I hope we will have very good teamwork and I think we will win as a team not just individually, but we need to work on communicating more,” senior Khloe Pederson said. “I honestly just want to have a good time this year because last year was so bad. I just really want to have fun with my friends and win some games!”
The freshmen are excited to be part of the team this year and to be able to improve their skills on a more intense level.
“I have been playing basketball since halfway into second grade. I love the intensity of the game and how it takes your mind off everything else with life and just focuses on the play happening in the moment,” freshman Tola Dombrowski said. “I want to improve my skills and confidence as I take the ball into the lane and just take shots if open. Additionally, I would like to improve my leadership skills even though I may only be a freshman, to get my voice heard on a bigger team.”
The coaches this year are looking forward to getting to know the girls better and searching for leadership roles on the team.
“I’d say Greta Dombrowski for sure would make a good leader on the team. After having the first year experience I hope she comes out of her shell and talks more,” Nelson said. “I also think Giselle Paszkiewicz has a strong voice and could be a good leader. Not to mention Khloe Pederson being one of our seniors, she has a great voice but just has to use it more.”
