As November comes to an end Greendale will host their annual tree lighting ceremony. On Nov 29 the community of Greendale gathers in the village to watch the Christmas spirit take off. At 6 pm they will light the trees and shortly after Santa Claus will show up riding on top of a fire truck. This event has plenty of fun opportunities for all ages.
Teachers who have attended the ceremony shared their thoughts on the event.
Math teacher Kelly Korek says that she attends the tree lighting every year.
“I like to go with my family because it is a great event to attend with a variety of people of all different ages,” she said.
But she does dislike some aspects about this. “If I could change one thing about this event it would be the weather. I wish I could control the weather because some years it’s blistering cold,” she said.
Choir teacher Michael Jones says that although he wishes their was guaranteed snow for the event, he loves attending the tree lighting. He takes a group of students from the choir there to perform sing-along caroling.
“I go with students to Carol. It targets all ages and kids get to see and hear music and sing along too while Santa comes around, he said. “The lights lighting up really brings the community together with all the shops and restaurants open for people to enjoy.”
While the teachers seem to be fans of the event it’s also very popular for students to attend with their friends and families.
“I really like going and seeing all my friends and connecting with different people there. I’ve gone to the tree lighting since I was about 10 years old, and I love the donuts and hot cocoa that they have here,” junior Zane Morris said.
He also mentioned how he would add a few more interactive activities if he could change anything about it.
Many students think that seeing their community come together is very eye-opening.
“It’s so beautiful to see the community coming together. I love to go to the tree lighting with my friends and family, but I also go to perform with the choir. My favorite part about the event is getting donuts and apple cider,” junior Kyla Bassler said.
