During the holiday season people often think about giving back to the less fortunate, but here at Greendale High School that doesn’t only happen during the holiday season. Many GHS students have volunteered to help out in their community. We find joy in helping others and representing Greendale as a whole through positive deeds.
GHS recently hosted a Blood Drive which gave students plenty of opportunities to help out.
“I volunteered for the blood drive during one of my class hours. I helped set up the gym to prepare everything for the people donating, and I really enjoyed doing this because it was helping others but I was still with my friends,” Student Council member junior Ella Padron said.
Tutoring is one very easy way to volunteer your time in school while also helping other students.
Senior Betsy Potkay has been tutoring kids in math. “I love the feeling of helping people, and I like to see the joy of them understanding content they were struggling with before. I also like seeing their grades improve, I have started officially tutoring this school year, but I have been helping people with their classes since middle school,” Potkay said. “When I tutor I help students solve homework problems, review for tests, and I explain concepts to them that they might not have understood before. Tutoring benefits the students who need a little extra help.”
Some students like to volunteer outside of school as well.
“I volunteered at a school. I was helping out the teachers. I was there for about 16 hours and I had a lot of fun spending time with the kids and helping them focus and calm down better for the teacher,” freshman Gabriel Gamboa said.
Not only do GHS students volunteer but the staff does as well.
“ I volunteer every month for The Gathering of SE Wisconsin with some other Greendale staff members,” math teacher Kate Hulett said. “I also volunteer every year to bake cookies to be sent to members of the armed services who are deployed away from home for the holidays. I used to volunteer as well with St. Vincent de Paul making desserts to be served at their meal sites.”
Hulett thoroughly enjoys providing for others, she’s been a part of this for about 8 years helping and giving to others out of the kindness of her heart.
“I enjoy spending time helping others. I enjoy cooking and baking – especially with amazing people like Mrs. Geiger, Ms. Merkel, Ms. Hutter, Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Yaccarino, and Mrs. Moore who take turns together making meals for The Gathering,” she said “I think we all need to take care of each other in this world.”
