Greendale high school has two parking lots with one in the back and one in the front. There is special parking for teachers and visitors as well. One thing that every student has probably thought is why do we have to make the far, treacherous walk before and after school.
The doors by the upper gym are open in the morning until 7:30 am. Any time after then until the end of the day they are locked. Students that have a morning release have to make the walk from the parking lot up to the office doors which can take three minutes. Students that have lived in Wisconsin all know how horrible the weather can be, so when it is -10 degrees or pouring rain that walk is never fun.
“I don’t like wearing hoodies to school sometimes so when we have to make that walk up the hill and all the way to the office it sucks,”Senior Giancarlo Lechuga said.
“Yeah, I park in the JC parking lot so it is a little bit of a tragic hike,”Senior Greysen Doersching said.
Obviously having the doors unlocked past the first bell of the day is a safety hazard. GHS has no hall monitors other than Joe Bustos who cannot always roam the entire school 24/7. Leaving those doors unlocked while unattended could risk the safety of the staff and students here at Greendale High School.
“Being that safety is of utmost importance and all doors need to be locked or monitored during the school day, there is a lack of available staff to safely and consistently supervise entry at additional locations for students with 1st, 2nd, and lunchtime releases,” Associate Principal Mark Pollex said.
Students that leave for lunch are aware of the rules and that you have to be a senior or junior to go out for lunch. The school uses scanners at the front desk in the office and on a rolling cart in the lunchroom to make sure that the people who go out for lunch actually have the privilege to go. Associate Principal Mr. Pollex is usually the person by the scanner in the lunchroom and encourages students to go through there instead of the office.
“All returning lunch kids come through the MPR to have their id scanned upon return,” he said. “Yes, there is a front desk person at the front entrance after lunches, but it became increasingly disruptive and potentially unsafe as she cannot be reasonably expected to juggle the supervision of a large group of returning students scanning back in, phone calls, any visitors checking in, deliveries, and all of the other complexities of being the receptionist.”
