At Greendale High School there are many charity events that students can involve themselves with. One charity that is held multiple times throughout the year is the blood drive. The blood drive is usually very successful when it comes to students and teachers donating. Students are told about the event a few weeks in advance so that people can plan and sign up and if you are sixteen you would need a permission slip.
Guidance secretary Khou Perry, encourages all students to donate.
“I think that everyone should donate because it’s such a good thing to do because you are saving lives and giving back to you community. I would donate if I wasn’t so scared of needles,” she said.
There are many students who gave in the most recent blood drive which was on Wednesday, April 30 here at the high school.
“There were 37 people who signed up and about 9 walk in’s, and I would say that this was the most successful blood drive on our end that we have seen in two years,” student council adviser Jeff Schaetzke said.
Some students who donated blood want others to know it’s very easy.
“I donate blood because it’s a simple way to save peoples lives. Just one donation can help multiple people, and I feel good knowing I’m making a real difference.” junior Zayd Cartagena said.
Even though there are many students who would like to donate, some are turned away because t=of the fact there are many factors that go into donating. Junior Sophia Carini was a student who got turned away because her iron was too low.
“Sadly I wasn’t able to donate but I usually do every time there is a blood drive,” she said.
student council hopes that more and more people will donate to evey blood drive that comes to GHS.
“I donated blood because I don’t mind needles and I feel like I’m helping people in some kind of way,” senior Elizabeth Potkay said.
It doesn’t take much to help people in need that’s why blood drives are such a big help to the community.
