Greendale Pickleball is a new league for students to have fun and go play pickleball with their friends. The league was founded this year by junior Spencer Wendlick. He is a big fan of pickle ball and wanted to create something where students could all go play pickleball and they could play against each other. He came up with the idea in the fall of 2024 and it quickly became popular. They just had another successful day on May 7 with over 25 people attending.
¨I started it because I wanted to bring the sport to the high school because over the summer last year I noticed a lot of people from Greendale playing at the community center. So I created the club to create a place for students to play pickleball and enjoy the game,¨ Wendlick said.
Pickleball is a very simple and fun game to play. All you need to have is a racquet and a ball. People typically play 2v2 but you can play 1v1. A lot of people at the pickleball league have a partner that they usually play with.
¨I always play with Hudson. We rarely lose and we’ve been playing together since last summer. He’s a very good partner to have because he used to play tennis so he’s familiar with racquet sports,¨ senior Landon Lopez said.
Pickleball has gained a lot of national attention within the last few years. It grew 39 percent between the years 2019 and 2022. With the rise of pickleball this attracted a lot more attention to it. Many high schoolers have picked up the sport as a fun and easy game to play.
“Pickleball Catching the Eye of More PeopleÏ started playing pickleball last year with Tess and we picked it up very quickly. Me and my friends started going to the community center and playing more often,” senior Addison Benning said.
With the increase in popularity in pickleball the Greendale pickleball league is destined to be great and have an increase in players. You can join by looking at the Greendale pickleball Instagram for future dates to attend.
