The Greendale baseball team is having an up-and-down season so far, with an overall record of 8-11 and a conference record of 5-5. They went on a roll against West Allis Central and Wauwatosa West, as in the three games, they outscored them 47-1.
The last three games have been two big losses, losing 0-6 and 0-10 to New Berlin Eisenhower, and then the most recent game, losing 3-2 to Oak Creek.
“We played well against West Allis Central and Wauwatosa West, but they were not on our level,” senior Jacob Spormann said. “For the rest of the season, we need to lock in.”
One thing that they need to improve on is hitting.
“I think we can always improve on hitting. If we improve our hitting, we will be way better,” senior Trevor Picago said. “We have been playing pretty well recently, but at the beginning of the season, we started off slow.
With nine games left in the season, the team needs to do its best to improve and get ready for the postseason.
“We can definitely improve and be better by the end of the season. We need to improve our defense since we struggle with that against good teams,” Spormann said.
Their next opponents include Muskego, Wisconsin Lutheran, Racine Horlick, Marquette, South Milwaukee, and Wauwatosa East.
The leaders in hitting on the team include seniors Hudson Bailey, whose batting average is up to .438, Cam Bueno, Luke Mattes, and Caden Meyer. The leading pitcher is senior Ben Hites, along with Bueno and Meyer.
The players hope they can end the season strong.
“We need everyone to come together and just have fun. Right now we are too tight. We need to let loose and have fun because we have 13 seniors and we want to go out on a good note,” Hites said.
