The school year is coming to an end and GHS staff and students are sharing their thoughts on the school year and some of the rules that were implemented this year.
One of the new rules was the pass system through Infinite Campus. Some students believe it is unfair and strict.
“I feel like the pass system can be unfair because some people will take a really long time to use the bathroom and only one person can leave the room at a time,” sophomore Lucas Burlo said.
Staff also believe that there could be improvements on the bathroom policy.
“Hall pass rules could be modified because it is hard when one person is gone for 20 minutes and others need to use the bathroom,” science teacher Courtney Ehlert said. “I also think that the rule where no one can use the bathroom between the first and last 10 minutes of the class should be modified because usually the last 10 minutes of class we have work time which would be better for students to use the restroom rather than when I’m teaching the class.”
Students think the new rule with exam exemptions is very benefical. They hope it will continue to stay that way.
“I hope they continue to do the exam exemptions because it really helps students take away some stress having to study for less exams. It also helped me stay motivated to do well on the ACT, so taking it away from students could have a bad impact,” junior David Acamovic said.
Staff express what they tried to implement for the students this year and how it went.
“I tried having my students put their phones in the phone caddies and it was exhausting to implement, but next year I will start taking attendance by people who have their phones in the caddies. I feel like students don’t realize how much they are on their phones and it takes away the worktime I give to them,” art teacher Pamela Merkel said.
While some staff thinks there should be more rules on the phone policy, students would disagree.
“I think the phone rule is unfair because we should not have to put phones into the caddies. I feel like you should be able to use your phone if you have your work done in the class as an incentive to motivate students to get their work done,” senior Jacob Spormann said.
Some students believe that there should be changes on the release policy.
“I wished they allowed sophomores with drivers license to leave for lunch or study hall. I understand that not all sophomores have their license but if some do I think it’s unfair that we are not able to get that privilege to leave,” sophomore Josie Dembosky said.
While some students think that the rules at GHS can be unfair others would disagree.
“I feel like the rules at GHS are not strict enough at times because there will be a lot of students misbehaving without any consequences. Rules are important to have to keep a positive and safe environment, so I feel like they could be a little more strict,” freshman Bella Sincere said.
Staff and GHS want the best for students and feel the school can be disconnected from each other at times, and hope there can be a change.
“School does not have to be a singular even where you study by yourself, take your tests, complete your assignments, and do everything alone when there is so many people out there lacking on making new connections,” choir teacher Michael Jones said. “You should be able to have fun in school it shouldn’t have to feel like a chore, so not building new relationships with people can restrict that,”
