The girls’ volleyball team is midway through the season, and they have been through a lot of ups and downs, but they have learned to stay strong through it all. With a record of 5-23 overall and 1-6 in conference, with such a young team, there is a lot of work to be done.
Although the team is not doing their best this season, they keep on working hard through the struggles.
“Something the team struggles with is not being able to close out a close match; instead, we tend to get tense and forget the basics,” junior Ava Russel said. “We also could work on covering our hitters more when they get blocked because we tend to lose a lot of points from that as well.”
There are a lot of close matches in volleyball, which is why players have to figure out ways to keep themselves calm.
“Something I do to keep myself calm is look down at my shoes and take two deep breaths; it helps my brain take a break for a second and relax,” sophomore Sophia Schroeder said. “Something I do to keep my teammates calm in the back row is hold their hand a little longer when we have five and tell them they got it and that I’m here.”
There are a lot of personal things the team thinks they could get better with.
“Something I think I could improve on is communicating more and getting my feet stopped and to the ball before I pass it, that way I don’t shank it, and by communicating, it shows my team I’m ready to get the ball,” freshman Lily Sowa said.
“Something I could improve on is pushing out my sets to the pin more so they can get a fuller swing, and when I dump the ball over the net, I need to be a little more sneaky so the other side is caught by surprise,” freshman Cece Wiedel said.
The team has done a lot of great things during their season so far that are not to go without recognition.
“From my POV as a captain who is injured, from watching on the bench, I think our team has done a great job of taking big swings and cheering for each other,” junior Maddy Ploszay said. “When a team has a lot of energy, we are almost unstoppable, so I think if our team keeps that up, along with good swings and blocks, we will be heading in the right direction to success.”
