With Halloween coming up, students and teachers at GHS are talking about their favorite scary movies. Their picks show what’s popular for getting into the spooky season.
Jenny Hussa, an English teacher, prefers psychological terror over simple jump scare films. Her favorite scary movie is Silence of the Lambs.
“I think there’s great psychological terror in that movie, and I love Jodie Foster’s and Anthony Hoplin’s performances in it.” Hussa said. She finds some popular series less impressive, and mentions the Friday the 13th series being overrated and predictable. For her, a good scary movie is all about suspense.
For students, it’s more about fun and survival. Junior Michael Bode enjoys unique and intense horror. If he had to survive a night in any movie, he would pick A Quiet Place.
“I would live on a remote island the aliens don’t already live on so if I made any significant noise they would not find me.” Bode said. His favorite movie is Talk to Me because the uniqueness in comparison to most horror movie tropes.
Freshman Claire Hegedus likes a mix of festive fun and classic scares.
If she was in a Scream movie, her plan would be “to stay with the main characters, never go anywhere alone, and keep my phone charged.” she said.
Her go-to film for getting in the Halloween mood is Nightmare Before Christmas.
She said, “It gets me in the Halloween mood because of the Halloween town with the mix of skeletons and pumpkins, and the eerie music makes it festive but not too scary.” she said. Her favorite tradition is watching the first Scream with her sister in their basement with the lights.
From psychological thrillers to slasher survival, it’s clear that Halloween movies are a big part of the season at GHS, with something for everyone to enjoy.
