Silksong, the sequel to award winning metroidvania Hollow Knight, has been in development for the last 7 years, and i was lucky enough to snag a copy on release day. I’ve made my way through all of act 2 (spoilers if you couldn’t tell), and I’ve gathered the thoughts of some people I know who’ve played it as well. This article is geared towards people that have played the game, so if some of the terms look odd (and they probably will) go read the wiki, or better yet, play the game. Finally, here’s my favorite builds and bosses
First up, my builds. I’m firmly a Wanderer’s crest fan. The quick attacks and simple pogos are too good to pass up. For my yellows i usually run the compass (im terrible with directions), the ascendant’s grip for the extra mobility, the weighted belt, as the wanderer’s attacks a lot so the reduced knockback is nice, and the magnetite dice for the random damage mitigation (It’s saved me so many times against Grandmother Silk).
My blue items are always the injector band for quick heals, sawtooth circlet for the extra damage, and the longclaw, as the wanderer’s crest has a pretty short needle range, so it’s pretty necessary. Sadly, my crest of choice has only one red slot, so for that i used the flintslate for extra damage. You’d think the flea brew would be a great idea for chainsaw-like attack speed, but unfortunately for all the lumberjack players, there’s an attack speed cap, so that build dies before it’s even started. I love running with the cross stitch silk skill, as parrying feels divine, plus the damage isn’t something to scoff at.
Next up, my favorite bosses. I loved the cradle lace fight, but I must say the Grandmother Silk fight is something I find myself coming back to quite often. I love the challenge of it, and the amount of attacks on screen make it a very fun sort of challenge. I’m currently trying to beat it without items, but that’s going about as well as you would expect. However, I have to say that my favourite boss fight in the game would have to be Trobbio. This flashy moveset and goofy expressiveness work together perfectly to create one of the most entertaining characters in the game as a whole.
Overall, Hollow Knight: Silksong is a masterclass in the metroidvania genre, and is some of the most fun i’ve had in a game. As such, it gets a 10/10 in my book, and I strongly recommend purchasing it for yourself and giving it a try.
