GHS Golf Team Season Starting Up

GHS Golf Team Season Starting Up

Will Brust, Staff Writer

The GHS golf season has gotten off to a slow start due to the recent horrible spring weather. In fact, the team has only been able to get out and participate at three events because of the weather. However, the weather has been getting back to normal so they have gotten more practice and they participated in another event on Friday at the Oakwood Golf Course.

The late snow has without a doubt been the main reason for the delayed start to the season. The snow even after a few days of nice weather has still only barely melted fully. Snow has also affected other sports such as soccer, and softball.

Junior James Johnson is frustrated about the snow affecting the golf season.

“We haven’t been able to get out and practice or play at all which stinks,” Johnson said. “There is not much we can do to play in cold weather besides dress really warm, the worst part is getting cold hands when golfing.”

Although at one of the three events they’ve competed at so far, the Eisenhower Mini Meet, Johnson made the most it and was the top scorer of the event finishing with a +3 score.

Senior Jacob Heid is looking forward to upcoming golfing events with the weather finally being nice again.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all of the players I played with last year, and competing at a high level,” Heid said. “I love meeting new people at meets, and getting to know them and seeing them the following years. That’s one of the cool things about high school golf.”

Heid is also hoping that the team can make a deep playoff run like they did in 2016 when they won Regionals and competed at Sectionals. Heid also wants to make it even farther in 2018 and possibly make a state run.

“I expect us to finish top five in the state this year,” Heid said. “Hopefully we can make a run at state this year too.”

It’s no question that the GHS golfers love playing outside in the nice weather. With hardly any nice weather so far, it’s been hard for this to happen. But junior Joshua Warner is certainly excited to play outside.

“My favorite part about golf is playing outside in the nice weather,” Warner said. “As well as hitting the ball far.”

Senior Cassidy Kramp enjoys golf for many other reasons besides playing outside in the weather.

“My favorite part about the game would have to be the versatility of it,” Kramp said. “It’s a lifelong sport that is impossible to perfect, so there is always something more you can practice, whether it be mentally or physically.”

With the recent success of the GHS golf team, they have high expectations coming into this season. The older players on the team such as Heid think that the team also has high expectations and should have a good season as well as making it far in the playoffs.
