The GHS Varsity football team is off to a 4-1 start in their season so far. Their wins have come against Pewaukee, Greenfield, Lake Geneva Badger, and Wisconsin Lutheran. Their only loss came to New Berlin Eisenhower on Sept. 7.

In the first three games, the Panthers defense had only given up one touchdown per game, which was a total of 20 points. They had only given up three points through the first half of the Eisenhower game before giving up 17 points in the second half. Then in the Wisconsin Lutheran game, they gave up one touchdown in the first half, then one in the second.

The Panthers offense has also been outstanding, outscoring opponents 118-40 throughout the first four games of the year. Their highest scoring outing was against Greenfield where they put up 43 points, their lowest was against Eisenhower only scoring 7 points.

Senior Jared Brockman says his favorite memory so far this season is beating Lake Geneva Badger.

“The most memorable part so far was beating Badger at their place,” Brockman said. “It was their first home loss in a few years and it felt really good. It also showed us what we were made of.”

The Panthers win against Badger was revenge to last year’s loss at home. They won 28-7 this year, and lost 24-23 last year.

The Panthers have many more strengths besides offense and defense though. Senior Josh Dymond lists other ways the team can hurt opponents.

“We have lots of guys who are smart and our effort is always 110 percent,” Dymond said. “We bring a lot of intensity on Fridays, and we all love each other.”

The Panther’s early game energy has been very important to each and every game they’ve played so far. In all of their games besides the Badger game, they have scored first and taken an early game lead. They’ve won those games that they’ve taken early leads in except for the Eisenhower game.

The Panthers still have a few big games left on their schedule. Senior Noah Radka thinks New Berlin West is the toughest opponent.

“New Berlin West is the biggest game remaining on our schedule,” Radka said. “They are always very competitive and have a similar speed-oriented play style to us.”

The Panthers are off to a strong start to the 2018 season, and right now are on pace to get a very high seed in the playoffs and likely make a deep playoff run due to their strong offense, defense, chemistry, and football IQ as Dymond mentioned. The rest of their season should be very exciting to watch as they make a push for a high playoff seed.
