After a season of mayhem and madness due to COVID-19, the Girls Varsity Tennis team finally get back to a normal season in 2021.

At the Woodland Conference, the girls finished the tournament in second place. Junior Natasa Pupovac battled through a three set match and defeated the defending champion, taking the title of the one singles champion.

Sophomore Katarina Zrnic finished strong in second place for two singles. Finally, sophomores Clara Farley and Lauren Mabbott took second place at 3 doubles. “I didn’t really expect myself to win the championship especially since I already lost to this opponent twice, so when the match was finally over I was so happy. It felt like it was a fever dream,” Pupovac said.

After conference, the girls moved on to sub sectionals where the number 1 doubles team of Pupovac and Zrnic, the  3 doubles team of  seniors Danijela Gallo and Abby LaPlante, and singles players  seniors Macy Ortloff ( #1) and Lema Elkhatib (#2) moved on to sectionals.

Whenever you’re playing a sport, no matter how good you may be, there is always room for improvement. There is always room for improvement to make yourself a better player. “I would say the part of my game I could improve most on would be my mental toughness and patience. Playing singles takes a lot out of you. I have to be under control and have patience during long rallies,” Zrnic said.

For every sport, you play different teams with different skill levels. Some schools may have highly skilled players, while others may have less skilled players. Each school is different and you are bound to have a few tough matchups. “Our toughest matchup was either Pewaukee or Eisenhower. They were both a very close loss (3-4) and our last two matches, which would determine the winner, ended in tie breakers and were over 2 hours long,” Pupovac said.

This year the Varsity team had girls from all grades, and at the end of the season, it was time to say goodbye to the seniors. “I think the thing I will miss most is being on such a welcoming and fun team. I’ve had so much fun all my years of tennis and I’m going to miss them all very much,” Gallo said.
