The Wisconsin State Fair was a successful season, open from Aug. 7-17. The fair includes extravagant food, fun rides, live music, and more. Students and staff at GHS enjoyed going this year with friends and family.
“I love going to the State Fair. I go at least once every single year with my family or friends, and I have a great time each time I go,” sophomore Dominic Schutten said.
Although some students have said they have a great time every time they attend the State Fair, others would disagree.
“I really don’t like to go to the State Fair anymore. Every time I go, it is very hot and crowded, and I don’t end up staying for very long,” junior Cece Szweda said. “I also don’t like how stinky and dirty it is. One year, I stepped in cow poop, and I wasn’t even in the barn area.”
Even though some things about the fair can be unenjoyable, many aspects of the fair make it worth going.
“I like the vibe of State Fair, it is very Wisconsin. Everyone is happy to be there and eating ridiculous foods without any judgment,” social studies teacher Cheryl Kingma-Kiekhofer said. “I love to people watch, eat the food, and see the insane things that are sold in the big building. My favorite thing to eat there is the fresh-cut fries, which are always hot and amazing and easily have to be the best fries ever.”
Not only is the State Fair a place to socialize and have a good time, but it also provides many opportunities to work. There are over hundreds of vendors at the State Fair, which requires many people to cover multiple positions.
“I have worked at the State Fair for 28 years. I am the special events manager for Major Goolsby’s. I really enjoy working there because it is a great opportunity to work with kids and other people,” at-risk educator Daniel Rogaczewski said.
Before the fair starts, there have to be lots of preparations for each vendor.
“Before the fair, I helped fix engines on motorcycles from Harley Davidson that were going to be at the fair. My neighbor works at the Harley Davidson Museum, and I am trying to become an engineer, so I had the opportunity to prep with them and get experience working on machinery,” freshman Rex Poppe said.
Overall, students and staff had a great experience and are looking forward to many more years of Wisconsin State Fair activities.
