Throughout the school year, administration has organized and executed Fun Flex days. These Flex days are rare and allow both teachers and students to take a step back, relax, and connect. Teachers are able to choose an activity they’d like to host and students join if interested. Having these Flex opportunities every couple months make it special for everyone.
Sources of strength adviser, Jessica Holshbach, walks through the planning process and the significance of Fun Flex.
“Fun Flex inserts some ‘fun’ into the dynamic of content intervention. Both staff and students are able to participate in a ‘healthy activity’ of their choosing with other peers that are also selected to participate in that activity,” she said. “Fun flex timing is determined by the advisory and flex calendar. It is nice when the weather cooperates because being outside also lends itself to sharing a place where both students and staff feel more spiritually connected.” “I hosted a diamond painting and it went well,” English teacher Ali Brimmer said. “I’ve hosted diamond painting for the past four times and works every time.”
“For my Fun Flex, I hosted the weightroom and it was packed,” special education teacher Matthew Susek said. “I’ve done the weight room for the past couple Fun Flexs and it goes great every time.”
Teachers share what activities they hosted and their thoughts.
“I hosted a decorating sugar cookies activity and it was pretty popular,” Foods teacher Elizabeth Seivert said. “I opened it up for four more students.”
Students enjoyed participating in activities.
“I went to Ms. Jones’ friendship bracelet making and it was fun because I was with my friends,” senior Bailee Soto-Flores said. “It was kind of hard though because we didn’t know how to tie the bracelets but eventually we got the hang of it.”
“I went to Ms. Welsch’s Fun Flex and got ice cream,” junior Ava Russell said.
“I went to Mr. Bauh’s for Pop Darts,” senior Alex Danbeck said. “I usually go to Mr. Bauhs for fun so I had a good time.”
Fun Flex is a positive activity for the school.
“I really like it because it’s a destresser and one is always hosted right before breaks so it’s something students can look forward to,” Soto-Flores said.
Teachers think it’s a great idea.
“I absolutely think Fun Flex is a positive thing for the students and teachers because it allows you to connect with things you have a common interest in,” Brimmer said.
“It was a good opportunity for other students who aren’t in my class to see what the kitchen looks like and if they’d be interested in joining a food class at some point,” Seivert said.
Staff and students give ideas for future Fun Flex Activities
“I would be interested in hosting some sort of salsa or dip Fun Flex activity,” Seivert said.
“I would like to see a Disney movie’s Fun Flex option,” junior Olivia Trentadue said.
“Hosting a 5 v 5 basketball game would be fun,” junior Pavle Dragicevic said. “I think a lot of people would like that.”
It is agreed among both teachers and students that Fun Flex is a healthy and productive way to connect with others through shared interests of activities.
