Flu season is here, and the weather is getting colder day by day. There are many things people can do to not only stay warm during the winter, but also to avoid getting sick during this season.
Junior Tiffani Galusha says during the winter, she sleeps a lot more than normal, especially when she cuddles up with a blanket in a cold room.
“When I was younger, my parents made me stay in bed all day. They would get soup for me, and if I needed something, it would be the end of the world if I got out of bed to get it,” she said.
Galusha also shares that the best piece of winter wellness advice she has ever received was to stay warm but to avoid sweating, as overheating can make you sick.
Sophomore Abby Motrek says her favorite meal to eat when she is sick is grilled cheese and tomato soup, which always makes her feel better. She also has a go-to medicine.
“VicksVaporub is the only thing that helped me when I had terrible allergies. I get them every year,” she said. “My family and I always get our flu shots around this time of year. I am also very big on washing my hands every time I touch something.”
Motrek says she double layers every piece of clothing she wears so that the wind doesn’t blow through the material.
GHS Nurse Shirley Lochoqitz shared that she has a winter routine that includes taking vitamins daily and making sure she has a heavy coat and gloves.
“When I am sick, I make sure to rest, keep up on my flu shots, try any medicine that can help, and keep my fluid intake going,” she said. “I also love to use Vicks VapoRub; it has helped me a lot in the past, especially when I had a really bad head cold.’
It sounds like everyone is prepared for the upcoming season, and everyone has their priorities straight.
All in all, keeping warm is the most important thing, alongside washing your hands consistently.
