A common summer hobby among Midwesterners throughout the summer months is fishing. Wisconsin is home to over 15,000 lakes and more than 84,000 miles of rivers, all filled with various types of fish. Fishing can be calming and pass time well while still being relatively cheap and easy to learn.
Many students have begun fishing this spring, spending lots of time at their favorite spots and spending money on their favorite lures.
“I have been fishing for only two years. I used to go once in a blue moon when I was younger and I hated it. I fish for bass, it is definitely my favorite fish to catch,” senior Charlie Sheridan said.
Other students have been fishing for longer and have had better success fishing in their respective spots.
“I’ve been fishing since I was in third grade. I’ve been going to this spot up north with my family forever,” sophomore Cooper Whichman said. “I’ve caught my biggest fish up there including my PB, a 4 and a half pounder.”
“I just started consistently fishing this spring. My favorite fish to catch is catfish. They fight better than bass,” sophomore Diego Zavala said. “But my biggest fish I’ve ever caught was a 14 inch bass in Muskego.”
Students all have their own favorite lure or bait to catch whatever fish they are going for. Many fish like bluegill and crappie tend to eat worms, while bigger fish like bass and walleye will eat bigger fish, which calls for lures which can be expensive.
“In my opinion, bluegills are the easiest fish to catch, you just need a worm and a bobber,” sophomore Aaron Sokolosky said. “But I have fished for walleye before with a baitcaster and a big lure on my dad’s boat.”
Fishing has been around for thousands of years and is very popular in Wisconsin. Go out, connect with nature and catch some fish this summer!
