For many students, lockers were once seen as necessary for getting through the school day. But in 2025, some students say lockers are becoming more of a forgotten storage space than something they use regularly.
Some seniors have stopped using lockers altogether because they simply do not have enough time between classes. Senior Zavier Castillo said he rarely goes to his locker because of how far it is from where he needs to be.
“Nah I don’t really use it, too far from my classes,” Castillo said.
With short passing periods, students say stopping at lockers adds stress. Castillo said he only checks his locker “like maybe once a week if I have to,” and that he mostly keeps “old notebooks and a hoodie” inside. He said passing time is “too short” and that it’s not worth the extra time just to stop.
The issue goes beyond just convenience. Some students feel that lockers no longer match the way school works today. Senior Phineas Lee said lockers don’t feel necessary anymore.
“I don’t think they’re very useful anymore, everyone just carries their stuff,” Lee said.
Location seems to matter. Lee said he would use his locker more if it were closer to his classes. He also said carrying everything in his backpack is easier because he doesn’t have to stop or remember to return to the locker during the day.
Other students said they simply do not have time at all. Senior Marty Henning said passing time is too short for him to make locker stops.
“I originally thought I would keep books in my locker, but ended up just carrying everything instead,” he said.
Even though some students see lockers as unnecessary, Henning said they shouldn’t be removed.
“I think the school should make lockers easier to access instead of getting rid of them completely,” he said.
Junior Nathan Takawira said he doesn’t use his locker at all and doesn’t see a reason to start.
“I’ve never used my locker, not once, and I don’t plan to,” Takawira said.
While lockers may not be used as often as they once were, students agree they could still be helpful, if they were easier to reach, more practical, or better designed for their needs.
